TL;DR — Key Findings
  • Three mushroom-derived beta-glucans were tested in S-180 tumor-bearing mice.
  • Tumor growth and CD4-positive T-cell and neutrophil populations changed in the model.
  • The animal findings do not establish cancer treatment in humans or apply directly to AP-glucan.

Abstract

This preclinical study extracted three beta-1,3/1,6-glucans from Lentinus edodes and tested them in mice bearing S-180 tumors using oral, intraperitoneal, and intratumoral administration. The preparations reduced tumor growth in the model and were associated with changes in CD4-positive T-cell and neutrophil populations in lymphoid organs and tumors. The work concerns mushroom-derived glucans and an animal tumor model. It does not establish cancer-treatment efficacy, dosing, or safety in humans and should not be generalized to Aureobasidium beta-glucan.

Summary

Summary

Study design

Three Lentinus edodes beta-glucans were tested by different administration routes in an S-180 mouse tumor model.

Interpretation

Tumor and immune-cell changes in mice do not establish human treatment efficacy or AP-glucan effects.
